Etymology: Of ῥάξ reminds ῥάματα (for *ῥάγμ-?) βοστρύχια, σταφυλίς. Μακεδόνες H. as well as Lat. racēmus `stalk of a cluster of grapes, grapes'. Further isolated; prob. a Mediterranean word (cf. Schwyzer 425 w. lit., 310). IE etymologies to be rejected s. W.-Hofmann s.v.; wrong also Carnoy REGr. 69, 286 and Ant. class. 27, 326. Older lit. in Bq. -- So prob. Pre-Greek (Furnée 126). ῥώξ will be a Pre-Greek variant. -- Demiraj, Alb. Etymologien 1997,196 adduces Alb. rrush `resin' which is identical to Rrush the old name of Ragusa; the word would be a substratum element.
